For papichaher first feature film, Mounia Meddour draws on her own experience as a student at a university in Algiers in the late 90s, at the heart of the “dark decade” which pitted the Algerian government against various armed Islamist groups.

Despite some elements of fiction, the director also relies on the veracity of the documentary film from which she comes by choosing to shoot in Algiers, to write her dialogues in “françarabe”, or to highlight the actress in Grass Lyna Khoudri, awarded the César for Best Young Female Hope for her performance.

Presented in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival 2019, Papicha, whose official screening ended with ten minutes of applause, imposed itself like a slap on the Croisette. The film was also awarded the César for Best First Work. On AlloCiné, he has an average viewer rating of 4.2 out of 5.
