Tonight on TV: the old-school disaster movie that deserves a catch-up session

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. This evening: a disaster film carried by Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin.

Temporarily cast by Neill Blomkamp (Elysium, Chappie) and starring Chris Evans, the disaster film Greenland – The Last Refuge is undergoing a cast change in development. Director Ric Roman Waugh takes over the project, while Gerard Butler inherits the lead role. The two men thus find themselves a year after having already collaborated together on The Fall of the President.

Having already saved planet Earth in Geostorm, Gerard Butler this time tries to survive a comet that threatens to cause an unprecedented cataclysm. He lends his features to John Garrity, a family man who embarks on a perilous journey with his ex-wife and their son to reach the last refuge safe from disaster.

In line with Twister, where Helen Hunt hunts down violent tornadoes, Greenland – The Last Refuge also evokes classics of the genre such as Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds or Roland Emmerich’s 2012 without however trying to compete with them. Indeed, the director favors the psychology of the characters, treating his subject in an intimate way.

With a very modest budget, estimated at 44 million dollars, the film collected more than 60 million. If this score does not make it profitable, it remains however appreciable for a film released in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic (and only on VOD in the United States). With an average viewer rating of 3.1 out of 5 on AlloCiné, Greenland – The Last Refuge is definitely to catch up tonight on TF1.
