Having first considered becoming a priest, then giving up a career as a professional sportsman due to a knee injury, Tom Cruise decided to turn to drama. He made his first film appearances in the early 80s in Un amour infini and Risky Business. The success of Top Gun in 1985 then made him a real star, which allowed him to try out more ambitious roles. He thus turns under the direction of famous filmmakers and gives the reply to respected actors, establishing himself as a versatile actor.
In 1986, the illustrious Martin Scorsese chose him to embody the spiritual son of Paul Newman’s character in The color of money. Adapted from the eponymous novel by Walter Tevis, it is a direct sequel to The Con man, directed by Robert Rossen in 1961, in which Paul Newman already lent his features to Eddie Felson, brilliant billiard player and crook at the small week.
Enjoying some commercial success, The color of money therefore opens the doors of the big leagues to Tom Cruise. During the following decade, the actor will chain in particular the shooting of feature films under the direction of Oliver Stone, Ron Howard, Sydney Pollack or Stanley Kubrick.
