Tony Yoka: “Perhaps my last fight in France”

Tony Yoka, who will be opposed to Martin Bakole on Saturday at the Accor Arena in Paris, expects a very tough confrontation for this 12th professional fight.

How do you feel before this fight?

I feel very good. We did a lot of preparation. I was really starting to miss the ring. We couldn’t organize this fight in January (due to Covid-19 restrictions). It’s been eight months since I last boxed, since I left my audience at Roland-Garros.

It’s a new fight in France. We know that the desire to fight abroad is strong. Is it for the next?

Maybe… Maybe this is my last fight in France. I know that I was offered a European belt two or three weeks ago. I know that I have proposals to fight on Top Rank evenings this summer. Already we will see this fight, and then I will think.

You could have faced Filip Hrgovic for a semi-final at heavyweight (IBF). Is the disappointment still there?

The disappointment is over. We had to refocus for this fight. The higher you go in the rankings, the more opportunities there are. I am currently ranked 16th in the world. I know that opportunities will continue to come to me if I do my job.

You blame Martin Bakole for insisting that this fight take place and make you miss the opportunity of the semi-final?

No, we’re not going to say that I don’t blame him, but I moved on. Now, I’m really focused on this fight. Do not waste energy thinking about something else.

I can’t see myself going back to Africa if I lose this fight

Before Martin Bakole, you had to face the Cameroonian Carlos Takam. Is there a difference between the two?

I don’t like to make comparisons between boxers, because it’s always different. But, in any case, Bakole is in the world Top 15.

How to beat Martin Bakole?

I’m faster and more technical. I think my explosiveness will make the difference from the moment I start chaining combinations and shots. I know I can put him in trouble at that time.

You are of Congolese origin like your adversary. This fight will be followed in Africa…

Yes and, of course, I can’t see myself going back to Congo after losing this fight. I know that he is very followed in the DRC. There will be a special flavor Saturday night in the ring.

You have the objective to fight in Kinshasa (DR Congo). Is it still relevant ?

Still. We are even in it! I am in full preparation and I think it will be done within a year, maximum. I can’t tell you more at the moment. Africa is truly the continent of the future, whether in sports or otherwise.
