Too complicated, Fossil abandons the connected watch market


Watchmaker Fossil stops costs in the field of smartwatches. Fossil was one of the largest producers of WearOS-based smartwatches. This withdrawal should therefore have an impact on this market.

“As the smartwatch landscape has evolved significantly in recent years, we have made the strategic decision to exit the smartwatch business,” said Jeff Boyer, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Fossil. “We have chosen to focus our core strengths and resources on businesses with greater growth opportunities.”

That is to say unconnected objects. Fossil will focus on its traditional watch, jewelry and leather goods businesses.

A bet with Google that didn’t work

However, the company will continue to support its smartwatches used by its customers for several years. “We will continue to provide Wear OS updates for our existing watches over the coming years,” Boyer said.

Google has already acquired the intellectual property of Fossil’s smartwatches for around $40 million, but Fossil has apparently not been very active in collaborating with Google.
