Too little funding: Greens are planning a premium for cargo bikes

Too little funding
Green plan premium for cargo bikes

The federal government has provided billions in support for the change in the German auto industry towards more climate-friendly drives. The Greens want to go even further in the next legislative period and are calling for a subsidy for cargo bikes.

The Greens want to spend one billion euros in the next legislative period to promote cargo bikes. One million cargo bikes should be funded by the federal government with a grant of 1000 euros each, said the Green budget politician Sven-Christian Kindler of the editorial network Germany. Unlike in the past, privately used cargo bikes should also be eligible for a subsidy. Currently only companies, municipalities or associations can apply for funding.

“There is no clean mobility for free,” said Kindler. Cargo bikes are of great importance in the turnaround in traffic. Many craftsmen and small businesses could also offer their services and trips with e-cargo bikes. But there is too little funding for them. The same applies to rental systems for e-cargo bikes and for families who want to buy a cargo bike.

In their election manifesto, the Greens demand that Germany become a “bicycle country”. Your vision is to create a complete bicycle network throughout Germany with connections in the border regions. “The bicycle has huge potential for the mobility transition. The bicycle industry is already booming and creating jobs.” The number of trips by bike and on foot should be doubled by 2030.
