Top Chef 2022: has Philippe Etchebest already won his Who can beat event?

This Wednesday, March 23, M6 broadcasts the sixth episode of Top Chef season 13 during which the candidates will face Philippe Etchebest and Paul Pairet in Who can beat. But has the dreaded leader ever won his ordeal?

For the sixth season of its contest, Top chef was completely turned upside down. Exit the historical conductors such as Ghislaine Arabian, Christian Constant, Thierry Marx and Cyril Lignac. Only Jean-François Piège retained his role and was then joined by a new band composed of Michel Sarran, Hélène Darroze and Philippe Etchebest. From this edition, the latter took control of his own event : Who can beat Philippe Etchebest? A step both appreciated and dreaded by candidates. Their mission is indeed daunting, since to qualify, they must make a dish better than that proposed by the MOF which is tasted blind and without the other jurors even being aware of its participation. In eight seasons, this event has become cult, as much as The War of the Restaurants or The Black Box. Corn Has Philippe Etchebest already won it? It’s less certain…

In his defense, the chef leaves with handicaps, in particular of time. “When you have your leg cut off and your arm taken away, it’s already a performance to release something (laughs). I leave with many handicaps, it’s the game, It’s funny but I’m not unbeatable“, he assured us during an interview. At the launch of Who Can Beat, the one who has just won a first Michelin star was only ranked second, behind the semi-finalist Olivier Streiff. This which allowed him to qualify directly for the next week of competition. The same observation was made during the seventh edition where Joy-Astrid Poinsot and Charles Gantois – who worked as a team – did better than Philippe Etchebest. On the other hand, in season 8, he won hands down against the seven candidates still in the running.

An additional difficulty for Philippe Etchebest and Paul Pairet

Unfortunately, the victory will have been short-lived, since the following year, he was defeated by the pair Adrien Descouls (Sarran brigade) and Clément Vergeat (Darroze brigade) composed for the occasion. Same story in season 10 where Philippe Etchebest failed to do better than Samuel Albert and Merouan Bounekraf. Worse still, during the eleventh edition, the host of Kitchen nightmare was beaten by two pairs : Gratien Leroy and Martin Feragus (from his own team) and by Mory Sacko and Adrien Cachot (from Paul Pairet’s team). Last year, Philippe Etchebest – now supported by Paul Pairet – finished the event tied for second with the Charline Stengel/Bruno Aubin duo, while Thomas Chisholm and Sarah Mainguy took first place in the standings. So it remains to be seen if, this year, Philippe Etchebest and Paul Pairet will do better! This time it’s not one but two plates that the chef-jurors will have to make. If the difficulty is greater, it still gives them twice the chance of winning against Louise Bourrat, Pascal Barandoni or even Ambroise Voreux.
