Top Chef 2022: why Glenn Viel has always refused to be a candidate

Before becoming a juror for this thirteenth season of Top Chef, Glenn Viel was approached several times to be a candidate. He explains the reasons for his systematic refusal.

From candidate to juror, there is only one step. For its thirteenth season, Top chef made a major change in its jury, separating from Michel Sarran. Philippe Etchebest, Hélène Darroze and Paul Pairet are now in competition with Glenn Viel. A newcomer who is encountering some difficulties, since the first two eliminated from the prestigious culinary competition came from his brigade: Renaud Ramamourty and Tania Cadeddu. This does not prevent him from still having a full team, since he was able to recover the two solitary candidates. This three-starred chef is perfectly aware of the pressure that weighs on the shoulders of the cooks who take part in the M6 competition. It is also for this reason that he himself refused to do his tests there.

Long before gaining this fame, Glenn Viel was indeed repeatedly approached by production. “I was often asked to participate, when I was younger“, he revealed in the columns of TV 7 Days on February 7th. However, he always declined this invitation both enticing and completely insane. “I’m not a contest man, I always failed. If there were barriers to cross, I went underneath!“, he admitted with a burst of laughter. But above all, this father considers himself to be “a coward” and is convinced that participating in this type of competition “is too complicated for [lui].

Why Glenn Viel is not made for Top Chef

And for good reason, the 42-year-old man is more like to take your time. His inspiration and his creativity are not necessarily lively enough in comparison with the time allocated to the candidates during the tests. “I can stay three hours in front of a zucchini wondering what I’m going to do with it. It’s going too fast for me. What I do with my mind, it takes me a long time to do with my hands.“, he detailed at the microphone of France info on February 16. Conversely, this experience as a juror – and previously as a guest chef – allowed Glenn Viel to “feed others“. So well that he even “writes recipes thanks to [son] switch to Top Chef“. Switching from one to the other now seems common. During certain events, former contestants challenge their predecessors. This is generally the case for Stéphanie Le Quellec, winner of season 2. This year, Jean Imbert and Adrien Cachot – respectively winner of season 3 and finalist of the 11th edition – will challenge the cooks.
