Top Gun: Maverick, big box cinema of the year 2022, Tom Cruise’s biggest success in France, is a feature film rich in spectacular aerial scenes. But surprisingly, the most difficult sequence to shoot did not include any planes!
In an interview with The Wrap, director Joseph Kosinski reveals that the biggest challenge was to shoot the scene, at the very end of the film, which sees Penny (Jennifer Connelly) take Maverick (Tom Cruise) on his boat. .
“This sequence was in some ways the hardest to do, because it was largely out of our control”says Kosinski. “For the sequence to be successful, you have to rely on the wind, which you had to get.” A quest that was not an easy task, the scene having been shot three times to obtain a satisfactory result.
In comparison, shooting the airplane scenes in Top Gun: Maverick ended up being easier. Meticulously prepared beforehand, they were indeed more predictable than that of the boat, linked for the most part to weather conditions.

Planning the aerial scenes of Top Gun: Maverick was like “a marathon” according to Kosinsky. “It took over a year of preparation and planning to install these cameras inside and outside the planes, working closely with the Navy to choreograph all the footage”he says. “I think I did 3,500 storyboards for this movie. The amount of planning was huge.”

“I think audiences feel that effort when they see the film”concludes the filmmaker. “That’s why people react positively to it, because it wasn’t shot in the studio. It was a film that we moved to, that we tried to capture as much of the authenticity. And you can feel that when you look at it.”
