In an interview with Screenrant, Joseph Kosinski, the film’s director, spoke about Maverick and Iceman’s special relationship. In the first part, the rivalry between the two turned into a real friendship that still exists after 36 years – even though Iceman and not Maverick won the trophy in 1986.

Maverick is still working as a captain and is training young pilots in the new part, in which he can certainly find himself. Iceman, on the other hand, has a career in the Navy and is a senior officer that Maverick has to take orders from. Nevertheless, the two are good buddies and confide in each other.

Kosinski also spoke about how special Iceman’s return in the sequel has been for cast members Tom Cruise (“Mission: Impossible”) and Val Kilmer. Shooting the pilots’ scenes together is said to have been very emotional because the actors haven’t seen each other for a long time and were looking forward to seeing each other again.
