Top mini athletes – Toyota makes the GR Yaris even sharper and stronger

Is there even more joy to be had than before with the Toyota GR Yaris? Toyota thinks yes and is further making the small top athlete more powerful – with more power, revised chassis, alternative transmission and new cockpit.

The powerful all-wheel drive vehicle has already been highly praised by fans and experts, and the video driving report up here in the story doesn’t leave much to be desired. But yes, more power is of course always possible, a digital cockpit is contemporary and an automatic system certainly invites new customers. But in detail: Most powerful three-cylinder on the market The 1.6-liter turbo petrol engine now produces 280 hp (at 6500 rpm) and delivers up to 390 Nm (at 3250 to 4600 rpm) of torque, that’s 19 hp and 30 Nm more than before. The valve train was strengthened, the material of the exhaust valves changed and the injection pressure increased. New lightweight pistons with wear-resistant rings and a new intake pressure sensor were also installed. The cooling performance package is now standard and includes a sub-radiator, which is intended to improve reliability when driving at full throttle, as well as modifications to the air intake and an intercooler spray. As an alternative to the manual six-speed transmission, the GR Yaris will in future come with a specially developed eight-speed automatic transmission , with which the DIN empty weight increases from 1280 to 1300 kg. Thanks to the transmission oil cooler, predictive gear selection function and extremely fast gear changes, it should also be suitable for competition in position D. In sport mode it keeps the engine in the speed range between 4900 and 7200 rpm, while in normal and eco mode it should have a balanced ratio between comfort and directness. The all-wheel drive with its adjustable torque distribution as well as the two Torsen limited-slip differentials remained unchanged. The complete The drive had to prove itself in the Japanese rally championship and in the Japanese endurance touring car series, among other things, before it is now offered to customers. Stiffer body, reinforced chassis The body has been further stiffened with 13 percent more welding points and 24 percent more structural adhesive. Toyota has also optimized the chassis. The spring rates were adjusted and the shock absorbers were strengthened. Additional bolts attaching the front shock absorbers to the body prevent changes in alignment that can occur when the upper bushing deforms under high loads, Toyota says.New, digital cockpitOne criticism of the GR Yaris was the relatively high seating position. In the new version you sit 25 millimeters lower and the steering wheel has been adjusted accordingly. The dashboard is completely new, digital and tilted towards the driver; the top edge was lowered by five centimeters. On the passenger side, the shelf in the instrument panel has been enlarged to create space for additional measuring devices or a monitor for the passenger. Subtle changes on the outside There is no facelift without changes that are visible from the outside – but in this case they should all have a deeper meaning. The lower, central radiator grille has a new steel grille, the side radiator grille now has a larger opening, and the lower bumper has a new, split construction that makes repairs and replacement easier and more cost-effective. At the rear, the air that is under the vehicle floor can flows through a new opening at the bottom of the lower fairing. This reduces air resistance, improves the maneuverability and stability of the vehicle and dissipates heat from the exhaust system. The fog and reversing lights move from the lower bumper to the rear lights. The upper brake light was moved from the rear spoiler down to the tailgate. Toyota is not revealing prices for the time being. It is unlikely to stay at the previous 45,000 euros for the GR Yaris Performance.
