NEW YORK (Reuters) – Torrential rains caused flooding in New York on Friday, disrupting subway operations and turning some streets into lakes.

A flood warning was issued as up to 6 inches of rain fell in some neighborhoods, including Brooklyn, Lower Manhattan and Queens, said Zack Taylor, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service (NWS).

This extreme rainfall prompted New York State Governor Kathy Hochul to declare a state of emergency in New York, Long Island and the Hudson Valley.

“Please take steps to stay safe and remember to never attempt to travel on flooded roads,” she wrote on the social network X, formerly Twitter.

The New York subway was severely disrupted, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the agency that manages the city’s public transportation. Traffic was completely interrupted on some lines and many stations were closed.

Photos and videos taken in various New York neighborhoods showed vehicles submerged in water in flooded streets and subway stations.
