TotalEnergies and Veolia join forces in biomethane

TotalEnergies and Veolia have signed an agreement to recover biomethane from Veolia’s waste and wastewater treatment facilities in operation in more than 15 countries. The partners will develop and co-invest in a portfolio of international projects with the ambition to produce up to 1.5 trawatt hours (TWh) of biomethane per year by 2025.

This production of renewable gas from organic waste will represent the equivalent of the average annual natural gas consumption of 500,000 inhabitants and will prevent the emission of around 200,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

The biomethane produced will be marketed by TotalEnergies, either as a renewable fuel for mobility, or as a substitute for natural gas in its other uses.

As part of this agreement, the two companies will pool their industrial know-how in biomethane production: Veolia will contribute its expertise in the production and processing of biogas from its facilities, and TotalEnergies will contribute its expertise in entire biomethane value chain.
