TotalEnergies: chooses a new site to set up its New Energies & Electricity R&D center in Saclay

Paris, January 28, 2022 – As part of its transformation, TotalEnergies has, since 2018, expressed the wish to set up its New Energies & Electricity R&D center in 2022 in the scientific and technological ecosystem of Saclay, thus contributing to its influence.

TotalEnergies notes that the building project intended to house its R&D teams in the area of the Paris-Saclay Public Development Establishment near the Ecole Polytechnique campus is subject to a significant delay compared to the initial timetable and recourse which will require several years before they can be definitively purged and allow its construction.

But the new energies do not wait. And the transformation of TotalEnergies – which accelerated in 2021 – cannot wait either.

Under these conditions, TotalEnergies has decided to set up shop this year, as planned, on the Saclay plateau in premises intended to house business innovation centers in order to permanently establish its New Energies & Electricity R&D center there. This center will be made up of more than 200 researchers and will develop collaborations with the laboratories of universities and schools, companies and start-ups.

Consequently, TotalEnergies has decided to abandon the project for a building of its own near the Polytechnique campus, while maintaining the scientific partnership with the Institut Polytechnique de Paris, in particular with the Energy for Climate centers on energy and Hi! PARIS on artificial intelligence and data sciences.

TotalEnergies and scientific collaborations at Saclay

TotalEnergies has developed many scientific and technological collaborations for several years with various teams based in Saclay:

  • Founding member since 2013 of the Photovoltaic Institute of Ile de France (IPVF), Institute for Energy Transition, which brings together major French industrialists, equipment manufacturers and academic partners;

  • Partnership with two research centers of the Institut Polytechnique de Paris:
    E4C (Energy for Climate) with the “Technological Challenges for Responsible Energy” Chair, since 2018;

  • Scientific projects with laboratories, for example on the detection of methane with the TRACE chair initiated in 2018;

  • Member since 2019 of VEDECOM, Institute for Energy Transition dedicated to the mobility of the future;

  • SINCLAIR joint laboratory with EDF and Thales dedicated to trusted artificial intelligence opened in 2020.
