(Boursier.com) — As part of its commitment to identify, quantify and reduce methane emissions related to its activities, TotalEnergies partners with Colorado State University to develop an international protocol for qualifying methane emissions measurements.

As part of the Global Methane Pledge, the United States Department of Energy and the European Commission’s Directorate General for Energy (DG-ENER) have recognized the excellence and expertise of TotalEnergies Anomaly Detection Initiatives (TADI) platforms of the Pôle d’études et de recherche de Lacq (PERL) in France and the Methane Emission Technology Evaluation Center (METEC) of Colorado State University in the USA, in order to become world references in qualification technologies for quantifying methane emissions.

This transatlantic initiative makes up for the lack of a common standard for validating methods for measuring methane emissions, which is essential for comparing announced emissions regardless of the technology.

For this scientific partnership, TotalEnergies and Colorado State University will collaborate, through their platforms, to: develop a protocol to certify the precision, detection limits and operational restrictions of measurements used for methane accounting; develop a method to estimate annual methane measurements from spot measurements.

It should be remembered that TotalEnergies has set itself new concrete objectives for reducing its operated methane emissions for the next decade: -50% in 2025 and -80% in 2030 compared to 2020. The Company has also undertaken to maintain the methane intensity at less than 0.1% on its operated gas installations.
