(Boursier.com) — Saft affiliate TotalEnergieshas delivered battery backups for critical safety systems in tunnels along a new stretch of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramula Rail Link (USBRL) between the towns of Banihal and Sangaldan in the Kashmir Valley.

Rail equipment manufacturer Autometers Alliance Ltd has turned to Saft for more than 30 sets of ReGenPro batteries to provide backup power for operating and safety systems in most of the railway’s tunnels. Saft’s ReGenPro batteries provide a minimum of two hours of runtime for critical tunnel safety and communications systems, such as lighting, emergency lighting, fire detection, data transmission systems and electrical switchgear. These two hours of autonomy will ensure the continuity of services and the safety of passengers and on-board staff.

In addition to the batteries, Saft has also designed specially reinforced battery supports capable of withstanding intense ground acceleration forces in the conditions encountered in seismic zone 5 of the Kashmir-Jammu region.

Let us recall that Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new section of the USBRL in February 2024, thus demonstrating the strategic importance and technical prowess represented by the construction of this link in difficult terrain, characterized by intense seismic activity and where winter temperatures drop to -20oC. The new 48 km line between Banihal and Sangaldan has 16 bridges and 11 tunnels, which represents more than 43 km. Among these is the T50, India’s longest transportation tunnel, which spans 12.77 km. When the section is fully operational at the end of 2024, it will reduce travel times by several hours and provide reliable passenger and freight services throughout the year. It will fully benefit the tourism economy and agriculture in the region.
