The fronts between the railways and the GDL have hardened, the current strike is annoying millions of rail passengers. The Pro Bahn passenger association brings Matthias Platzeck into play as an arbitrator. Brandenburg’s former prime minister has an impressive career as a mediator – and union boss Weselsky trusts him.

Train drivers are groaning in view of the recently started strike by the train drivers’ union (GDL), which is expected to last a full six days. The deadlocked collective bargaining dispute does not suggest that this will be the last time that train drivers stop work. Millions of people who rely on the railway would like to see a solution soon and an end to restrictions and uncertainty. The Pro Bahn passenger association is now bringing the former Brandenburg Prime Minister Matthias Platzeck into play as a possible mediator.

Federal Chairman Detlef Neuß told the “Rheinische Post”: “Matthias Platzeck would certainly be suitable to carry out arbitration.” He has the necessary experience in dealing with collective bargaining disputes, said Neuß.

“Arbitration is now absolutely necessary. The parties to the conflict must finally come together.” We therefore support Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing’s request to both sides to no longer rule out arbitration proceedings.

Platzeck has already arbitrated three times

Platzeck had already mediated between Deutsche Bahn and GDL several times in the past. Most recently in 2020. At that time, Weselsky, who had repeatedly rejected arbitration proceedings in recent weeks, said: “We have already gotten to know and appreciate Mr. Platzeck as a fair, competent and reliable arbitrator in the last two arbitrations at DB.”

In 2015 and 2017, Platzeck – together with Thuringia’s Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow – was able to ensure peace. So there is no lack of experience. However, both sides must once again be open to mediation in the current conflict.
