Toulouse: five men sentenced to 9 to 15 years in prison for beating a man to death

Five men were sentenced Thursday by the Toulouse Assize Court to sentences ranging from 9 to 15 years in prison for beating a 53-year-old man to death in May 2019 outside a bar.

The five defendants, aged between 23 and 30, were convicted of “violence in meetings leading to death“. On May 26, 2019, the group attacked a man in a bar in Toulouse for a futile reason. He had been beaten up and died of his injuries.

Sentences ranging from 8 to 15 years’ imprisonment had been requested against the five men. “We are relieved that justice has been done“, declared at the end of the verdict Me Virginie Belacel, lawyer for the family of the victim.

Me Nicolas Raynaud De Lage, lawyer for one of the defendants, denounced “sentences of homicidal intent, when there was no intention to kill“. The couple running the bar was also tried, for “no assistance to the person in danger“. They had drawn the curtain of the establishment after having expelled the group, without informing the police. They were given 12 and 18 month suspended prison sentences. The Advocate General had requested a one-year suspended prison sentence against them.
