If the women’s Tour de France will start next year, there is indeed a woman who has already participated in the Grande Boucle. But for that we have to go back to 1908.
While the Tour de France 2022 is in full swing, next year, women will also be entitled to their Grande Boucle. But this is not the first time that female athletes will do the Tour de France in cycling. Indeed, in 1908, 162 cyclists had to start the stage which started in Neuilly-sur-Seine. But now 48 athletes are missing. Finally, only 114 runners will start. But now a few minutes after the start of the race, a woman arrives. Shis name: Marie Marvingt, 33 years old.
She who tried to register for the Grande Boucle was confronted with the displayed misogyny of Henri Desgrange, the boss of the Tour. Too bad for the registration, she will still decide to start. Coached by her father, the young woman carries all the hopes of her family, “on land hitherto reserved for men”. Besides cycling, Marie Marvingt is passionate about swimming. In 1906, she became the first French woman to cross the Seine. She also climbs the Alps, downhill skiing, sledding. She won a total of twenty gold medals.
Committed to France
The sportswoman will also be passionate about aviation. She will be the first woman to cross the English Channel in a balloon. Marie Marvingt will pass her pilot’s license and will perform until 1909 no less than 900 flights. So when war is declared, it is only natural that she will offer her services to the Air Force. But once again, it will be a “no”. But it was bad to know the young woman who will disguise herself as Poilu to go and fight in the trenches. Faced with such a career, an association asked that Marie Marvingt return to the Pantheon: “This gesture would also constitute strong support for caregivers in the Grand Est region, hard hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, who would appreciate the recognition of one of their own. It is a whole city that awaits your decision and of which I am today the relay”.
