Toxic substances – bathing warning in the Ottenstein reservoir remains in effect

Swimming in the Ottenstein reservoir in the Waldviertel is still not recommended. A study has now confirmed that there are toxins from cyanobacteria, i.e. blue-green algae, in the water.

The bathing fun in the Ottenstein reservoir is still missing. Because a water analysis by the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) confirms: Toxins from cyanobacteria – colloquially blue-green algae – were found in the reservoir. Only last Friday, the district authority advised against bathing until the complete clarification. This recommendation continues to apply. Further results will follow. On August 29, another check-up was carried out. Results are expected early next week. Regular sampling by the AGES should follow “in order to be able to closely monitor the development”. A bathing ban could not be issued by the district administration for lack of a legal basis. Because of the bathing water ordinance, however, bathing is strongly discouraged.
