Toyota launches electric offensive with 30 new models

Will that be an electric Lexus LFA? It would be possible – at least the study gives an outlook on a sharp device from the Toyota subsidiary.

Toyota hesitated for a long time when it came to electromobility, now the Japanese are going all out. The group wants to bring 30 e-models by 2030 – including a few hot ones.

For a long time, the Toyota Group has relied on hybrid drives and held back with all-electric vehicles. Now the Japanese are pushing their way into the Stromer market: by 2030, there are to be 30 e-models in the portfolio. Noble subsidiary Lexus will even be purely electric.

From small cars to commercial vehicles

Group boss Akio Toyoda has now presented 15 of the new electric vehicles in the form of studies. In addition to the bZ4X crossover, which is about to be launched, at least three other crossovers and a mid-range sedan will follow under the bZ label. Small commercial vehicles, large pick-ups and off-roaders are also part of the planned range.

Sharp design

Two models stand out. A Lexus study suggests a radical supercar – an electric successor to the legendary LFA V10 hypercar. The two-seater coupé has an elongated front section and a passenger cell that is set far to the rear, slit-like headlights with boomerang daytime running lights and huge air vents in the front apron, bonnet and rear fenders. Details about the drive and power are not yet mentioned, but the Japanese promise a sprint time of just over two seconds to 100 km / h and a range of up to 700 kilometers – thanks to the solid battery.

A small car à la Toyota Aygo is also among the presented electric studies. Chances of realization: very high.

The parent brand Toyota is also trying to sharpen its sporty profile. It shows a purely electric roadster, which could be a potential successor to the discontinued MR2 sports car, especially since the study has compact dimensions and a mid-engine layout as the MR2 once did. You won’t find any technical information here either.

The Japanese want to offer an e-car in all segments by 2030 and sell at least 3.5 million e-vehicles per year worldwide – this corresponds to around a third of current sales. From then on, models with internal combustion engines will no longer be sold in Europe, North America and China. Five years later, Toyota aims to be all-electric around the world.
