  • Official sources report at least 230 dead and 900 injured. It is the worst train accident in India for more than ten years.

After a derailment in the Indian state of Odisha, two passenger trains and a suspected freight train collided. The accident happened around 7 p.m. local time on Friday evening. The rescue work continued in the dark. Within a few hours, the number of dead rose to at least 230 and the number of injured to around 900.

Legend:

It is not the first and certainly not the last serious train accident in India: The first weekend in June starts with many dead and even more injured.

Numerous other people could lie under the overturned wagons.

There are currently different reports on the circumstances of the accident. Various sources confirm that two passenger trains are involved – it is unclear whether a freight train was also involved in the accident. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on Twitter that he was shocked by the accident. His thoughts are with the grieving families.

Although train accidents are common in India, the number of victims is seldom so high. According to agencies, this is the worst train accident in India in over a decade. The railway minister has now ordered an investigation into how exactly the accident on Friday evening could have happened.
