If you want to take your data with you from one computer to another, this is not simply possible with programs: You have to save these in the form of their setup files and then reinstall them. EaseUS ToDo Trans Pro is the software of choice for moving programs that have already been set up to a different Windows installation. The application is already recommended in the free version, but only transfers a maximum of two applications here. This restriction does not apply to the Pro version. It offers two data transfer routes: via the local network and via an image file. In a wizard you choose which programs are to be backed up. The transfer does not work with all applications, but in our samples a considerable number was transferred to another device. The image file is a few hundred megabytes in size, depending on its content, so have a large external USB (SSD) hard drive ready. You not only install EaseUS on the computer with the data to be backed up, but also on the target device: There you select the restore function, import the image file from the external medium and sit back for a few minutes.

EaseUS ToDo PC Trans Pro saves images in PCT format. If your PCT file is more than 4 gigabytes (GB) in size, your external storage medium will need NTFS formatting: The older FAT32 file system only supports files up to 4 GB. Only normal (x86) programs flow into the images, but no Windows 8.1, Windows 10 or Windows 11 apps.

In the test, for example, Foxit Reader and Sumatra PDF got from Windows 10 to Windows 10 without any problems and in another migration scenario from Windows 10 to Windows 11. We installed Thunderbird on Windows 10 and it could be integrated into another Windows 10 – / – 11- Copy installation; the account previously set up in the e-mail client remained. This enables work to be continued seamlessly. The transfer of data is not carried out so lightly in all applications; this should be tried out on a case-by-case basis.

The EaseUS solution is preferable to other tools for computer data transfer – if only because there is hardly (any more) competition. Microsoft, for example, once offered a transfer tool: Windows EasyTransfer (migwiz.exe), but that could only transfer files and user profiles, not programs. Under Windows 8.1, the on-board resources are limited compared to their counterparts in older system versions; under Windows 10 and Windows 11 it only exists in the form of garbage in the folder C: Windows System32. Who the migwiz.exe call over Win-R and the run dialog command migwiz would try with Windows 10 and higher, only see a System32 subdirectory of the same name in Windows Explorer. The Win-R call does not control an EXE file, but a system32 folder, since the system32 content is in the Windows search path.

EaseUS ToDo PC Trans Pro is well suited for use with Windows 10 as well as Windows 11. Its images of your programs are a relatively lightweight solution: Alternatively, you could capture your software with another tool as an image backup, with Windows also being part of the backup data set heard. The memory consumption would be a lot higher. Furthermore, playing back such complete images on different hardware is prone to errors. EaseUS ToDo PC Trans Pro backups, on the other hand, only contain application data instead of Windows and your software – they are therefore less complex and not as memory-intensive.

Move programs from C to D.

A practical additional function is to move programs from one drive to another. You don’t simply install Windows on the D partition (there is a trick), but you don’t have to. With EaseUS ToDo PCTrans, instead of the entire operating system, you only transfer selected programs to, for example, D. This is an advantage on a computer that has an SSD as a boot drive and a hard disk as a data storage device: You save capacity on the mostly scarce disk space C : and put the same amount on D: which your hard disk represents. Since hard drives usually have more storage space than SSDs, that’s okay. Moved applications remain functional. In the future, however, they will run with reduced performance. This is acceptable in the case of severe capacity bottlenecks with narrow-chested SSDs. The feature can be found on the left under “Local Transfer”.

Another goodie is “System optimization”. The function scans for junk files, browser history and cache content as well as for ballast from “Windows build-in applications” (apps) and from Windows Media Player, WordPad and Paint. With a click, the dispensable content found is sent to the collar. It is not uncommon for users to shovel gigabytes of storage space free.

If you would like to use the PC relocation aid, you can request a serial number from the manufacturer – without specifying your email address. You can get this on the promotion page: If you click on “Get version 11.8 for free”, your web browser will scroll down to a button of the same name. Click on it. A moment later you will be shown your license key. Select and copy it to the Windows clipboard with Ctrl-C. With the key you activate the program on the source and target PC. In our tests, it was sufficient to request a key once; it could be used on different computers.
