Travel to Serbia: discovering Belgrade and Novi Sad: Current Woman The MAG

Belgrade (photo) is reborn, as always. Located at the crossroads of civilizations and empires – Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian… the city has been destroyed more than forty times! The assistance of a French-speaking guide is highly recommended if you are interested in history or architecture, because in the streets or in museums, everything is indicated, at best, in English, or only in the Cyrillic alphabet. The "Louvre" in Belgrade is the National Museum, with rich archaeological collections. You will admire medieval frescoes and icons, rare coins and masterpieces by Flemish painters and French impressionists.

Mausoleum, princely residence …

The Museum of the History of Yugoslavia, which houses the Mausoleum of Tito, provides a better understanding of the contemporary history of this country. At the residence of Princess Ljubica, we will present to you – with cakes and a small glass of rakia, a very fruity brandy – the tradition of Slava, this holiday celebrated by every Serbian family in honor of their patron saint.

Shopping and evening entertainment

Do not miss a visit to the Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Sava, with its Byzantine elegance. The park of the Kalemegdan fortress is a green oasis where Belgraders like to walk and play sports. We come to contemplate, from the top of the ramparts, the confluence of the Sava river and the Danube. Everything here is much cheaper than in France. A good opportunity to renew your wardrobe and indulge yourself in the bars and restaurants of Knez Mihailova pedestrian street. In the evening, you have to walk the cobblestones of rue Skadarska, located in the Belgrade Montmartre, a bohemian district where the restaurants are animated by folk groups or gypsy music.

Novi Sad, cultural capital

100 km from Belgrade, Novi Sad, the second largest city in the country, has received the nickname Serbian Athens due to its architectural and cultural attractiveness. The city will be the European Capital of Culture in 2021. Crossed by the Danube, it is dominated by the impressive Petrovaradin Fortress, which faces it on the south bank of the river. In the city center, you can admire the buildings with neo-Baroque, neoclassical, Art Nouveau, modernist architecture … and the Orthodox churches where you can have the chance to come across a wedding or a chanted requiem. Take a leap to the Silk Factory, a former textile factory converted into a cultural center. It is at the bend of a comic book exhibition, or by mingling with a secondhand book sale, that one grasps the intense Serbian artistic creativity, expressing the sensitivity of the Slavic soul.
