Gabriel Attal made his second trip as Prime Minister this Wednesday. Along with the victims in Pas-de-Calais on Tuesday, the former Minister of National Education was this Wednesday in a police station in Val-d’Oise, alongside Gérald Darmanin. The new tenant of Matignon wants to establish its legitimacy.
Gabriel Attal had very little contact with law enforcement during his political career. But it was to them that the new Prime Minister made his second trip this Wednesday as a head of government, the day after his meeting with residents of Pas-de-Calais, devastated after the floods. In a police station in Ermont, in Val-d’Oise, alongside Gérald Darmanin, a priori confirmed as Minister of the Interior, Gabriel Attal positions himself on the ground and wants to establish his legitimacy.
“Thank you for your daily work for the safety of our fellow citizens,” he said in particular to the police. Leaving the police station, the new Prime Minister echoes Emmanuel Macron’s words on the need for authority. “Here in Ermont, as everywhere in France, live French people who aspire to order and tranquility. French people who work and who never fail in their responsibilities. There is no republican order without our police . It’s a very clear message that I came to reaffirm here.”
Attal-Darmanin, a rather fresh relationship
This trip with Gérald Darmanin also aims to smooth out the angles between the two men who until then had a very fresh relationship. The tenant of Place Beauvau congratulated Gabriel Attal on Tuesday, upon the announcement of his appointment, but in a very sober manner, before leaking to the press that he had, thanks to Emmanuel Macron, the assurance of remaining at his position in the coming months. Through this, Darmanin attempts to free himself from the supervision of the new tenant of Matignon.
However, everything went perfectly this Wednesday afternoon. The two men appeared side by side and even had breakfast together in the morning. But we will still have to monitor, in the coming weeks, the nature of their relationship and especially the autonomy that Gabriel Attal will grant to Gérald Darmanin, if the latter is indeed confirmed at Place Beauvau.
