In the case of several allegedly oppressed women in the Bernese Jura, the first instance court in Moutier has passed its verdict.
Accordingly, the five accused men from the Balkans were acquitted of the serious charges of human trafficking, forced marriage, assault, coercion and rape.
The court justified the decision with lack of evidence.
There are convictions for violations of the Aliens Act and in one case for sex with minors.
The head of the family, a man now 65, and his four sons have been accused of keeping their sons’ wives in slave-like conditions for years.
The women are said to have been brought to Switzerland by a gang of traffickers. The five defendants were charged with human trafficking, forced marriage, assault, coercion, rape and sexual acts with children.
The defenders, however, incriminated the women. In the course of the proceedings, they had changed their versions several times, and not just in details. They would have blown a story to legalize their status in Switzerland.
