Disney gradually lifts the veil on Tron: Ares. The third part of the franchise Tronafter the original 1982 film and its sequel Tron: Legacy released in 2010, began filming last January in Vancouver and today reveals itself a little more through a first image of the main character, dressed in a red jumpsuit.
Return to the Grid
In Tron: Aresthe cyber universe imagined by Steven Lisberger is this time directed by Joachim Rønning (Maleficent: The Power of Evil) from a screenplay by Jesse Wigutow (8 Mile) and Jack Thorne (His Dark Materials).
According to Disney, the film would follow Ares, “a highly sophisticated program that is sent from the virtual world to the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humanity’s first encounter with Artificial Intelligence.”
The very current question of the relationship between AI and humans should therefore be at the heart of this film which therefore seems to stand out from its predecessors because it should spend more time in the real world than in the digital world.
“I’m excited to be a part of the Tron franchise and bring this new film to fans around the world,” Rønning said in a statement. “Tron: Ares builds on a legacy of cutting-edge design, technology and storytelling. Now more than ever, is the right time to return to the Grid.”
The first image of the film shows Ares himself, played by Jared Leto (Suicide Squad, Morbius). The rest of the film’s cast consists of Greta Lee (Russian doll), Evan Peters (Dahmer), Hasan Minhaj (The Morning Show), Jodie Turner-Smith (Sex Education), Arturo Castro (The menu), Cameron Monaghan (Shameless) and Gillian Anderson (X-Files, Sex Education).
Producers include Sean Bailey, Jeffrey Silver, Justin Springer, Jared Leto, Emma Ludbrook and Steven Lisberger, with Russell Allen serving as executive producer.
If Tron: Ares will not be released in cinemas before 2025, the two other films in the franchise can be (re)discovered on the Disney+ streaming platform.
