US military plane crashed – five bodies found

After a military plane crashed off the Japanese island of Yakushima, several bodies of the crew members were found – but not all. The emergency services were also able to locate the wreckage of the Osprey CV-22. It is the second crash of a machine of this type in just a few months.

During a large-scale search operation off the coast of Japan, rescue workers found five bodies in the wreckage of a crashed US military aircraft. Diving teams from the USA and Japan confirmed the discovery of five of the eight crew members, the US military said. Accordingly, the emergency services located the bodies along with the main fuselage of the aircraft wreckage during their search operation. Two of the five crew members found have already been rescued. The rescue work continued.

The US military had previously announced that divers searching for the missing crew members had found remains in the waters off southern Japan. These were discovered along with wreckage off the island of Yakushima. The identity of the dead still has to be determined. Japanese broadcaster NHK reported that the front part of the plane, possibly including the cockpit, appeared to have been found.

Not the first Osprey crash

The Osprey CV-22 plane crashed off Yakushima on Wednesday last week with eight people on board. The body of a crew member was recovered the same day. Two other crew members are now still missing.

In August, three US Marines died when an Osprey military aircraft crashed in northern Australia; the cause of the accident was unclear. Last year, four US Marines died when an Osprey crashed during a NATO exercise in Norway.
