Former US President Donald Trump has described Germany as “Russia’s hostage” with regard to the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.
“Frankly, Germany will break up NATO,” Trump told Fox Business on Tuesday. «Germany is really a hostage of Russia. There’s no question at all.” Trump also criticized Chancellor Olaf Scholz for his behavior in the joint press conference with US President Joe Biden on Monday in the White House.
During the performance, Biden made it clear that a Russian invasion of Ukraine would mean the end of Nord Stream 2. “If you look at the new German head of government, he looked at Biden according to the motto: What are you talking about?” Trump scolded. “He didn’t even comment on it.”
Too little pressure on Russia
Scholz did not mention Nord Stream 2 during the press conference. However, he promised: “We will act in full agreement on the sanctions.”
Nord Stream 2 is to bring Russian gas to Germany, bypassing Ukraine. There has been massive criticism of the project in the USA for years, which has increased significantly since the escalation of the Ukraine crisis. Scholz has been accused by some allies of not putting enough pressure on Russia in the Ukraine crisis. Doubts have also been raised in the USA as to whether Germany can be counted on in an emergency.
