Trump to pardon January 6 rioters if he wins 2024 presidential election

(Reuters) – Former U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday that if he stands in the 2024 presidential election and wins it, he would pardon those charged with offenses in connection with the assault on the Capitol Washington men on January 6, 2021.

Donald Trump, who did not say whether he would run for president again after his 2020 defeat by Joe Biden, was speaking at a rally in the state of Texas.

“If I run and win, we will treat these people (who participated in the January 6 events) fairly,” the former president announced to applause.

“We will treat them fairly, and if that means we have to pardon them, we will pardon them, because they are being treated so unfairly,” he added.

Supporters of Donald Trump invaded the headquarters of Congress in Washington on January 6 to try to prevent the certification by American parliamentarians of his defeat in the presidential election of November 2020.
