Tui Cruises is finally laying the foundation for environmentally friendly cruises

The still nameless “Mein Schiff 8” was laid down yesterday at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy. Coins, including one with a picture of the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, were sealed in a box and welded to the ship.

The still nameless “Mein Schiff 8” was laid down yesterday at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy. Coins, including one with a picture of the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, were sealed in a box and welded to the ship.

Wybcke Meier, CEO of TUI Cruises, and Cristiano Bazzara, Director of Fincantieri, thus seal the new cooperation with the shipyard. The previous ships in the fleet were built in the Meyer shipyards in Papenburg, Lower Saxony, and Turku, Finland.

Sustainable growth powered by gas

The new ship class from TUI Cruises focuses on environmental and climate protection. The new building is operated with liquid gas and thus offers an environmentally friendly drive. The use of low-emission and climate-friendly BIO- and E-LNG is possible, which represents a significant step towards climate-neutral cruises.

Wybcke Meier explains that LNG serves as a bridging technology and that BIO-LNG will be used in the long term.

Just a few days ago, TUI Cruises published a first sketch of the new ship. Except for the gross tonnage of 160,000 (in comparison: AIDAnova, 183,858 GT, 6,600 PAX maximum) and the type of propulsion, no further information is known about this new building.
