TUTO Stadia: here’s how to switch the controller to Bluetooth mode using official Google software

Since this week, all Stadia services are inaccessible, Google having as planned closed its servers for lack of success. The platform of cloud gaming leaves no trace behind except for its controller, which we could use via Wi-Fi thanks to a Chromecast or wired on other consoles. And if some hacks allowed to use it in Wi-Fi on other devices, it was not really possible to use it in Bluetooth. As a last minute gift, Google said it would allow it to be switched to Bluetooth mode for use on more platforms.

The manufacturer’s official tool is now available: so how is it going? First thing, know that the switch to Bluetooth mode is irreversible: you will no longer be able to use it in Wi-Fi anywhere thereafter, a lesser evil. Then you only have until December 31, 2023 to do the manipulation or update your controller (Google obviously providing a small after-sales service in the event of the discovery of glitches), but after this date, the operation can no longer be carried out officially. Once the mode change is done, you can use it on Windows 10 and above, MacOS 13 and above, ChromeOS and Android.

Now that you know that, all you have to do is grab a USB-C cable and head over to the dedicated site since Google Chrome to follow the process. It is also necessary that your controller is charged at more than 10% to perform this operation.

  1. Click on “Switch to Bluetooth mode”.
  2. Click on “Start”.
  3. Check “I accept Google’s Terms of Service” and click Get Started
  4. Plug in your controller via a USB-C cable or make sure it’s already plugged in and click “Get started.”
  5. Allow Chrome to verify your controller: Select “Stadia Controller rev. A” in the window that appears and click on “Connect”.
  6. If your controller is not sufficiently charged, an error message will appear: recharge your controller to at least 10% and resume the operation – Click on “Next step”.
  7. Unlock your Stadia Controller: If you haven’t already, unplug the controller, press “…” while plugging in the controller, and simultaneously press “…” + “Assistant” + “A” + “Y” then click on “Next step”.
  8. Download the Bluetooth mode update: click “Allow Chrome to download”, select the “SP Blank RT Family” device in the window that appears, then click “Connect” and “Next step”.
  9. Install Bluetooth mode: click “Allow Chrome to install”, select “USB COMPOSITE DEVICE” and click “Connect”. Wait during the installation and it’s done!

To pair your controller with a compatible device, simply use the command Y+Stadia when your controller is off and it should appear in the list of devices that can connect via Bluetooth. And if you have other questions about officially compatible platforms, the possibility of using the Jack port in Bluetooth and more, you can turn to the FAQ below.

How do I pair my controller via Bluetooth?

After switching the controller to Bluetooth mode, press the Y+Stadia buttons for two seconds to trigger pairing mode. The status light flashes orange.

Then go to the device you want to play with and pair the controller in the settings. Once paired and connected, the controller’s status light turns solid white.

Cheer ! You are now ready to play. The next time you turn on the controller, it should automatically connect to the last paired device.

Which devices are compatible?

Since not all Bluetooth devices are the same, their compatibility may vary. The Stadia Controller uses low energy Bluetooth connections. Some features, such as audio passthrough, are therefore not usable wirelessly.

We’ve verified that the Stadia Controller works with the compatible devices on the list. It has not been tested with all types of Bluetooth devices. It is therefore possible that it does not work with others.

Is audio supported in Bluetooth mode?

When using the wireless controller in Bluetooth mode, the 3.5mm port and USB port cannot be used for the headset.

When using the wired controller via USB, you can plug the headset into the 3.5mm port on the controller.

Can I reconfigure the Capture and Assistant buttons?

Yes. By default, the Capture and Google Assistant buttons will only work in Bluetooth mode if they are reconfigured. For this you can use button mapping services.

How do I check my controller mode?

You can check the controller mode to see if it is in Bluetooth and if there are any Bluetooth mode updates available.
