Animation studio DreamWorks has made millions with a series about a green ogre and his friends. “Shrek” is one of the studios’ most successful animated films. In this spin-off, which serves as a prequel to the second “Shrek” film, we accompany the fluffy audience favorite with the googly eyes on his own adventures.

Puss in Boots used to be a celebrated hero until his friend Humpdy Dumpty betrays him. He is now forced to make a living through theft and is outcast. Together with the thief Kitty Velvetpaw, they come up with a plan to steal some magic beans. Kitty is after them and the cat could also make up for the guilt in his home village.
Antonio Banderas (“Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Destiny”, German Benno Fürmann), who had already lent his voice to the cat in the “Sherk” films, also took on this role in “Puss in Boots”.
Salma Hayek (“From Dusk Till Dawn”, German Carolina Vera Squella) sang Kitty Velvet Paw and Zach Galifianakis (“Hangover”, German Elton) sang Humpty Dumpty. Mexican director Guillermo del Toro, known for his films “Blade II” and the “Hellboy” adaptations, worked as executive producer.
Compared to other DreamWorks films, such as “Madagascar”, “How to Train Your Dragon” and “Kung Fu Panda”, “Shrek” was one of the most successful franchises. The combination of clever humor, satirical portrayals of fairy tale characters and a heartwarming message helped the “Shrek” series gain a wide fan base and become an important part of animated film history.

The spin-off with the fluffy adventurer grossed around 552.4 million US dollars worldwide, making it the 7th most successful Dreamworks animation production, ahead of “Madagascar”, “How to Train Your Dragon” and the first ” Shrek”. The film was also nominated for an Oscar in the “Best Animated Film” category along with its Dreamworks colleague “Kung Fu Panda 2”.
“Puss in Boots” received a rating of 86% on the rating platform Rotten Tomatoes. A sequel, “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” was released in 2022.
