In Japan, the wrecked civil war veteran Captain Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) trains the emperor's troops in the use of modern weapons to arm them for the fight against the country's last samurai. Completely fascinated by their traditions and their strict code of honor, the desire soon grows in him to become a real samurai himself.
