Twitter: Elon Musk demands employees adhere to a ‘hardcore’ corporate culture or walk out the door


A Twitter engineer has shared the content of an email sent by Elon Musk. He draws the contours of Twitter 2.0, a social network in which coders do not count their hours, do not challenge the decisions of the chief, and come to work in the office.

Elon Musk does not hide it: he is a workaholic. No wonder when you see the number of now flourishing startups he has created: Tesla, SpaceX or The Boring Company. He attributes the success of the latter to an ethic made up of dedication to the company and strict respect for the hierarchical order. As we know, the American-South African businessman has just acquired Twitter, and the least we can say is that his debut as CEO was eventful.

In an email sent yesterday, Mr. Musk issues an ultimatum to employees who have not yet been fired in Twitter’s first big layoff wave: Either they undertake not to count their hours and to work “very intensely or they take the door. The resigners will receive the equivalent of three months’ salary as severance pay. Employees only have a few hours to give their answer (validated by a simple click in the form included in the email). Engineers who choose to stay will have to put themselves in “commando” mode. The coming weeks are likely to be very busy indeed.

That said, all of Elon Musk’s initiatives are far from successful. The general opinion was that the new version of Twitter Blue, which, in addition to other exclusive features, offered the “Verified” sticker against the payment of a €7.99 subscription, was a real fiasco. The offer caused a proliferation of fake parody accounts and was pulled two days after its launch. Twitter Blue version 3 will be deployed from November 29, 2022.

In addition to submitting to strict work discipline, Twitter engineers must abandon the idea of ​​telecommuting. From now on, they will spend their time in the offices of Twitter, at the rate of at least 40 hours/week. Elon Musk explains the reasoning behind this draconian policy: “What makes SpaceX and Tesla successful is its employees who work on site, and who work hard”.
