(Reuters) – Twitter will now require people to have an account on the social network to view tweets, a measure that its owner, Elon Musk, described on Friday as a “temporary emergency measure”.
Users attempting to view content on the platform will be prompted to create an account or log into an existing account to view tweets.
“We were getting so much data plundered that it was degrading service for regular users,” Elon Musk said in a tweet.
The Twitter boss had previously expressed his dissatisfaction with artificial intelligence companies like OpenAI and others that use data from the social network to train their language models.
The company has taken a series of steps to bring back advertisers who have left the platform since Elon Musk took over.
Earlier this month, Twitter announced plans to focus on video, creators and business partnerships to revitalize the company’s business beyond digital advertising. (Report Khushi Mandowara and Akash Sriram in Bangalore; French version Kate Entringer)
