Elon Musk today announced a new rule regarding parody accounts on Twitter.

The latter will have to clearly claim their “parodic” side to avoid a suspension that is both immediate and definitive.

Parody accounts more scrutinized on Twitter

Since taking control of Twitter, not a day goes by without Elon Musk making a new announcement. After the certification system integrated into Twitter Blue, now the American businessman is revealing something new with regard to parody accounts (and those who have fun mocking him by modifying their account).

Indeed, if Twitter allows many personalities and companies to claim their authentic side (via certification precisely), the platform is also full of parody accounts. Some being clearly identified as such, while others turn out to be very (too?) close to reality, using for example the same profile image and a very similar name, even if it means often fooling (voluntarily or not) the users…

Is the parody over?

Thus, after having indicated that humor had its place on Twitter, Elon Musk wanted today to confirm the new house policy concerning parody accounts. Also, these will be deleted if they do not clearly show their side… parody precisely.

Twitter’s new CEO explains: Previously, we issued a warning before the suspension, but now that we are generalizing the check, there will be no warning. This will be clearly identified as a requirement to sign up for Twitter Blue “.

Note that various certified accounts had fun “parodying” Elon Musk by changing their first name/first name and profile image, like Sarah Silverman or Kathy Griffin, the latter having immediately had their account suspended.

The new certification system thus raises many concerns, and many are those to criticize this umpteenth policy of Twitter. On the other hand, many users have also been calling in recent years for better management of parody accounts, especially those capable of (sometimes deliberately) misleading users, thus creating significant fake news. Some parody accounts are also suspected of gaining subscribers for a few months, before completely changing direction and then having a large audience to disseminate all kinds of information.

It remains to be seen now how the “new Twitter according to Elon Musk” will evolve in the coming days…
