Drama in the Bernese Seeland: Late on Sunday evening, the Bern canton police received an emergency call about a fire in a residential building on Steinackerstrasse in Leuzigen. The emergency services and rescue workers, who were deployed immediately, noticed a heavy smoke development and flames rising from the building when they arrived on site.
Two adults and a child were able to escape from the house on a canopy and were rescued from there by the fire brigade using a ladder. A second child had been able to leave the house on their own. The four people were slightly injured and brought to the hospital by ambulance. The fire brigade located and recovered two other children in the course of the operation in the building. Despite immediately initiated rescue measures, her death had to be determined.
Also house no longer habitable
The Büren regional fire brigade was able to bring the fire under control with around 80 emergency services and extinguish it at around 2.30 a.m. A fire watch has been set up. Two members of the fire brigade were brought to the hospital for control. There were also several ambulances, two Rega helicopters deployed as a precaution, the Care Team of the Canton of Bern to look after those affected, and the Biel professional fire brigade with a large fan. Several patrols and various special services were on site on the part of the Bern canton police.
The house was badly damaged by the fire and is no longer habitable. The community was able to find a housing solution for the affected people. The main road was closed until around 2 a.m. A diversion was set up by the fire brigade.
The Bern canton police, headed by the Bernese Jura-Seeland Regional Public Prosecutor, have started investigations into the cause of the fire.
