Two individual wins are enough – Bencic and Golubic lead Switzerland into the final – Sport

  • As in 2021, the Swiss tennis women are in the final of the Billie Jean King Cup.
  • Viktorija Golubic and Belinda Bencic win their two singles games in straight sets against the Czech Republic.
  • The Australians are waiting for the final in Glasgow on Sunday.

Against the highly rated Czechs, the most successful team in recent years, Viktorija Golubic presented in a sovereign manner. The Zurich player defeated Karolina Muchova 6: 4, 6: 4.

Afterwards Belinda Bencic prevailed against Karolina Pliskova 6: 2, 7: 6 (8: 6). In the second set she made up for a deficit of 2:5. The doubles were no longer played.

Golubic’s first win over Muchova

As in the last group game, Captain Heinz Günthardt relied on Viktorija Golubic (ATP 77) instead of Jil Teichmann (WTA 35). The 30-year-old from Zurich honored his trust without fail.

In the 3rd duel with the former top 20 player Muchova (WTA 149), Golubic won for the first time. She started the game perfectly and won 11 of the first 12 points. In the 2nd set she struggled a little more in her service games, but after 90 minutes she used her 1st match point with a service winner.

Bencic strong nerves

The perfect specification made Belinda Bencic rise again in an emotional high in the 2nd single against Karolina Pliskova (WTA 32). The former world No. 1 was far from convincing on her debut in Scotland, but she had beaten Bencic at the US Open two months ago.

This time, however, the Olympic champion and world number 12 had the upper hand. Bencic clearly won the first set, in the second she fended off a set ball and then kept her nerves in the tie-break.

Now against Australia

In Sunday’s final, Switzerland meets Australia, who dramatically defeated the hosts Great Britain 2-1. Match winner was Storm Sanders. The 28-year-old won her singles against Heather Watson and alongside Samantha Stosur then also the doubles against the British duo Alicia Barnett/Olivia Nicholls 7: 6 (7: 1), 6: 7 (5: 7), 10 :6.
