On December 4, 2023, Recommerce, one of the leaders in the refurbished smartphone market, has just published its latest “Re” 2023 index, i.e. the ranking of the best-selling second-hand models during the year.

Without real surprise, Apple and Samsung continue to dominate the Top 10 devices reconditioned most sold in 2023 on Recommerce in 2023. However, in a year marked by galloping and persistent inflation, the top of the ranking has changed with 5 new entrants.

iPhone 11 becomes best-selling refurbished smartphone of 2023

Thus and according to Recommerce data, two fairly old models have risen to the top thanks to their attractive prices. Indeed, the iPhone 11 took first place, followed by the iPhone XR. Great performance for these two smartphones launched 4 and 5 years ago respectively.

More than ever, reconditioned products attract consumers for their economic advantages, despite an inflationary context. This year, as always, we see the near monopoly of the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy in our ranking,” said Augustin Becquet, CEO of Recommerce.

The iPhone 12 misses 1st place due to recent controversies

Furthermore, we note that the iPhone 12 entered the rankings in 3rd position of the most popular reconditioned models. According to Recommerce, the brand’s former Apple flagship could have obtained a better place, but according to the company, the fact that it was withdrawn from the market in September 2023 inevitably had a significant impact on its reconditioned sales.

As a reminder, at the beginning of September, the ANFR ordered the suspension of the sale of the iPhone 12 on French territory. According to the national frequency agency, Apple’s smartphone displayed a wave emission rate that was much too high and therefore represented a risk for users’ health (5.7 watts per kilogram while the authorized threshold is of 4 W/kg). It took October 26 for the ban to finally be lifted after Apple deployed an update.

In the rest of the Recommerce ranking, we find the following models:

  1. iPhone 11
  2. iPhone XR
  3. iPhone 12
  4. iPhone 8
  5. iPhone SE
  6. Galaxy S10
  7. Galaxy S21
  8. Galaxy S20
  9. iPhone 7
  10. iPhone 13

According to Recommerce, the reconditioned market is showing an encouraging growth of 5% for the year 2024, despite certain challenges such as the introduction of Private Copy remuneration.
