AMD has added two new mobile processors to its catalog that are based on its old Zen 3+ architecture. Intended for both laptops and mini-PCs, these chips aim to boost the American giant’s mid-range offering with its partners.
Two additional Ryzen 5 APUs have joined AMD’s mid-range of mobile processors, but be careful, they are not the latest technology.
Introduced to the brand’s catalog without any particular announcement, these new Ryzen 5 7235H and 7235HS complete the “Rembrandt” lineage by both relying on the Zen 3+ architecture, which is aging, as it has been used by AMD since the beginning of year 2022, first on the Ryzen 6000, then on the Ryzen 7035.
Two new chips… with not so “new” architecture
With these two new processors, AMD is targeting laptop PCs aimed at gamers and “creative” users, but is also targeting mini-desktop PC assemblers looking for a good performance-price ratio.
As a reminder, these two Ryzen 5s are arriving on the market after the launch of the low-consumption AMD Ryzen 8000 processors, which are more recent in design and have been available on the market for a few months now.
On a technical level, the Ryzen 5 7235H and 7235HS are both built around 8 cores and 16 threads, clocked between 3.2 and 4.2 GHz. There are 8 MB of L3 cache, 2 MB of L2 cache, and the whole thing has a thermal envelope of 45 W by default.
An enriched AMD mid-range at a lower cost
As its nomenclature indicates, the first of these two chips relies mainly on performance (it can also be overclocked, note Wccftech), while the second rather seeks energy efficiency. However, this is the main difference between these two references, which otherwise have a common technological base and very similar specifications.
Through these new Ryzen 5 7235H and 7235HS, AMD is in any case seeking to somewhat increase its offering in the mid-range. The manufacturer wants to offer processors offering, at least we hope, a good performance-price ratio despite an architecture that is slowly starting to date. We should therefore find them shortly on affordable machines.
