Two years after its release, the Meta Quest 2 becomes more powerful

Meta has increased the performance of its Meta Quest 2 simply through a software update. The company promises up to 7% more performance for its virtual reality headset by “overclocking” the device.

With its metaverse project, Meta aims to provide a quality experience for its users. This requires high-performance virtual reality headsets, such as the Meta Quest Pro released a few months ago. But its Oculus division hasn’t forgotten the Meta Quest 2, an older model released earlier, which is going to be (a little) more durable. Performance has been improved with an update that “overclock» the headset chip.

Improved Meta Quest 2 GPU performance

In a statement, Oculus announced that users have “now more GPU computing power on Meta Quest 2 devices – 7% to be exact“. According to the developers, this should “allow to take advantage of higher pixel density without drastically reducing the resolution in order to achieve the target frame rate“.

The frequency goes from 490 to 525 MHz and Oculus states that “No integration or coding is required to start enjoying the benefits of this enhancement“, apart from the standby to be done for “that the added GPU frequency is granted to the device“. A manipulation that should no longer be mandatory from version 49 of the operating system, today in version 47.

Good news for the virtual reality headset

Specifically, games and applications will run better and animations will be slightly smoother than before. However, developers will have to update their applications to ensure that they use this new computing power.

This is good news for the durability of the Meta Quest 2 which will be able to last slightly longer. This improved performance will perhaps avoid having to change headphones, although 7% is not a huge gain. Moreover, the Meta Quest 3 should be launched next year: its predecessor is therefore living the last year of its lifespan.

Nevertheless, we learned this summer that the price of Meta Quest 2 would increase by 100 euros. Finally, the performance/price ratio is far from being improved.
