Ubisoft entertain: Sony’s takeover of Bungie fuels Ubisoft’s stock market rebound

(BFM Bourse) – After the announcement of the takeover of Zynga by Take-Two and then that of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft, the wave of consolidation continues in the video game sector. Sony Interactive is snapping up the Destiny 2 publisher for $3.6 billion.

The acceleration of mergers and acquisitions in the video game sector gave a considerable boost to Ubisoft last month. The title of the French group recorded more than 17% gains in January, against the tide of the market, boosted by the major transactions announced in the space of a few days – first the takeover of Zynga by Take-Two Interactive, then that even more impressive of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft, subject to the approval of the competition authorities. The movement continues on Tuesday, the Ubisoft share climbing another 2.48% to 52 euros around 9:30 a.m., after a new transaction in this universe.

While its rank appears to be directly threatened by the advent of the future Microsoft-ATVI group, Sony Interactive Entertainment was quick to react by announcing, on Monday evening, the conclusion of a definitive agreement to buy out all of the capital of Bungie, Inc., a former subsidiary of Microsoft (at the origin of the Halo series, of which the giant took over the rights) independent since 2007. Sony agreed to a price of 3.6 billion dollars to get their hands on Bungie , whose main asset today is its Destiny series, a multiplayer shooter.

“The consolidation of the sector is accelerating and should not stop there”, mentions Charles-Louis Planade, the analyst of Midcap Partners who has long asserted that Ubisoft is a potential target in the face of the insatiable appetite of entertainment and digital giants.

“Platforms buy content producers that are still independent. There remains a significant one, with an almost unrivaled production capacity and holder of an extraordinary catalog of games: Ubisoft”, considers the specialist, who reaffirms his buying advice without surprise. on the title of the tricolor champion, with a target of 119 euros.
