Ubisoft pulls the plug: GTA alternative is about to end

In October 2020, Ubisoft launched Watch Dogs: Legion, a GTA alternative with a hacking focus. But the game does not seem to have become a real open-world long-running hit, because it has now been officially announced that there will be no further updates for Watch Dogs: Legion.

While Rockstar Games has been providing GTA Online with new content for more than 8 years, Ubisoft has already run out of breath on Watch Dogs: Legion after less than a year and a half. As part of an official blog entry, the developers announced that Title Update 5.6, which was rolled out in September 2021, was the last update for the open world game and there would be no more major patches from now on (source: Ubisoft). This applies to both single and multiplayer, which only found its way into the game in March 2021.

In online mode, players can currently still participate in Season 5 called Stripes, to secure items and co. After the end of the season, Ubisoft only warms up the old content and rotates seasons 3 to 5 one after the other. In this way, players should have the opportunity to dust off rewards that they have missed in the past.

The Watch Dogs series has cool ideas but can’t always implement them

The Watch Dogs series has always struggled to establish itself alongside Rockstar’s acclaimed GTA series. In every game there were interesting ideas, which, however, were not consistently thought through to the end. For example, why should a hacker crew, who wants to gather as many followers as possible, take on the authorities heavily armed and scare the entire city?

There was a similar problem with Legion. The system, which allows you to transform any NPC into your character, provides a hell of a lot of depth on paper – but since these randomly created people don’t tell an interesting story, there is still a lot of potential here.

It remains to be seen how the Watch Dogs series will continue in the future. Currently, however, the success of the series is likely to fall far short of Ubisoft’s expectations.
