As his name circulated to take over from Prime Minister Liz Truss, Boris Johnson withdrew from the race for 10 Downing Street. The former mayor of London, who also served as Prime Minister, met his former finance minister, Rishi Sunak, on Saturday, the first candidate to have filed his 100 sponsorships.

Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Sunday evening that he would give up running for Downing Street, leaving the way open to big favorite Rishi Sunak to succeed Liz Truss, barring a new twist.

“Over the past few days I have unfortunately come to the conclusion that it just wouldn’t be the right thing to do. You can’t govern effectively if you don’t have a united party in parliament,” he said. he explained in a statement, saying he had had the 100 endorsements from Tory MPs, essential to continue the race.
