VINNYTSIA, Ukraine (Reuters) – A Russian military strike on Vinnytsia, a town in central Ukraine far from the front lines, killed at least 21 people on Thursday, including three children, Ukrainian authorities said.

According to Kyiv, Kalibr cruise missiles launched from a Russian submarine in the Black Sea are behind this “act of terrorism”, to use the words of Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky.

Ukrainian authorities say three Kalibr missiles hit the town.

No comment was immediately made by the Russian Ministry of Defense. Moscow denies targeting civilian targets as part of its “special military operation” in Ukraine.

Ukrainian Interior Minister Denis Monastirsky reported 21 dead and 91 injured, 50 of them seriously, in Vinnytsia.

Ukrainian rescue services announced on Telegram that they were looking for 42 missing people.

Vinnytsia, a city of 370,000 inhabitants located about 200 km southwest of the Ukrainian capital, is home to the command center of the Ukrainian air force, according to an official site of the national army, which had been the target of a missile strike in March.
