Ukraine: three dead and twelve injured in attacks in Kherson

Russian attacks killed three people on Monday and injured twelve including a two-month-old baby in Kherson, a large city in southern Ukraine, local authorities announced. The country celebrated on Saturday the first anniversary of the liberation of Kherson by its army, after eight months of occupation. But Russian forces remain close by. Only the Dnieper River separates them from the city, which is bombed almost daily.

Kherson, 240,000 fewer inhabitants since the Russian invasion

Two people, a 62-year-old woman and a 45-year-old man, were killed and ten others injured during an artillery attack on the center of the city, the region’s governor, Oleksandr Prokudin, said on Telegram . According to this source, this attack “destroyed or damaged” a hospital, an administrative building, around fifteen houses and eight vehicles including an ambulance. Two caregivers and a hospital patient were injured, according to the governor. Earlier in the day, a Russian artillery strike also hit a car in a suburb of the city, killing a man and injuring a two-month-old child, the head of Kherson’s military administration, Roman Mrochko, reported.

According to Roman Mrotchko, this baby and his family were returning from a “medical examination” when their vehicle was hit by gunfire. In total, according to the latest report, the strikes left 3 dead and twelve injured during the day, said Roman Mrochko. The inhabitants of this regional capital would remain only 60,000 according to the authorities, compared to 300,000 before the start of the Russian invasion, launched in February 2022. Ukrainian troops have held the right bank of the Dnieper for a year and are facing the army Russian, on the left bank, which still occupies part of the regions of Kherson and Zaporizhia. But, according to Russian and Ukrainian bloggers and experts, the Kiev army has managed to anchor forces on the occupied bank of the Dnieper since the end of October, in particular in the village of Krynky.
