Guest of the program “Le Grand Rendez-vous”, Valérie Pécresse, Republican candidate in the presidential election, calls for tougher sanctions against Russia. The candidate denounces a “gap” between the decisions taken at European level and the reality on the ground.
She raises her voice. Valérie Pécresse, Republican candidate in the presidential election, proposes the implementation of several measures against Russia on the Ukrainian file. The candidate believes that there is “a gap” between the Versailles Summit – which brought together the 27 Member States of the European Union on the subject of the war – and the “imperative decisions to be taken” on the conflict.
“We must take three types of imperative decisions: continue to toughen sanctions, ensure Europe’s energy independence, move forward with European defense and finally put in place a European plan to protect populations against the collateral effects of this war”, declared Valérie Pécresse at the microphone of Europe 1.
No embargo on Russian gas and oil?
Nevertheless, candidate LR opposes an embargo on Russian gas and oil: “there is no consensus for this embargo because a certain number of states are totally dependent on Russian gas and oil.” Valérie Pécresse also proposes economic-type sanctions: “First, we can remove all Russian banks from SWIFT, including those that finance oil and gas exports. The second subject is to attack not only to the oligarchs but to their heirs. Finally, the third type of sanctions that can be taken are those that were decided upon at the G7, which make it possible to stop international Russian financing. And that again, that is not not done.”
Valérie Pécresse also notes “a problem of efficiency”: “The Versailles Summit decided to double the number of weapons to be supplied to Ukraine, but certain weapons (promised before the Summit Editor’s note) have not yet arrived.”
