At the annual general meeting of FC Bayern Munich on Saturday evening (October 15th), there was a remarkable scene: The 70-year-old honorary president of the club, Uli Hoeness, was hard on the member Michael Ott when leaving the hall: “Your performance was embarrassing . This is the football club Bayern Munich and not the general assembly of Amnesty International.”

The reason for Hoeness’ criticism is Ott’s negative attitude towards the ties between the football club and the Emirate of Qatar. Ott is committed to discontinuing the sponsorship deal with state-owned airline Qatar Airways. The emirate, which owns the airline, has been criticized for, among other things, the catastrophic treatment of migrant workers and the oppression of women and homosexuals. In November, the soccer World Cup will take place in the desert state.

At the general meeting, Ott addressed the topic and asked the President Herbert Hainer about the controversial sponsorship. According to his own statement, Ott responded to Hoeness’ accusation that FC Bayern Munich should also comply with human rights.

at Picture TV Hainer commented on the derailment of his predecessor Uli Hoeness on Sunday. He pleaded for leniency: “That’s how we know Uli, so emotional, he defends his Bayern with all facets. He didn’t wait for Ott, but met him when he left the hall. Bayern Munich, that’s Uli’s club, that’s how we like it.”
