UNITED NATIONS, May 10 (Reuters) – The United Nations General Assembly is expected to support a Palestinian bid for full U.N. membership on Friday by recognizing that the Palestinians meet the necessary criteria and referring the request to the Security Council for “favorable review of the matter.”
The Palestinians have renewed their efforts to fully enter the United Nations, a step that would recognize the existence of a Palestinian state, after the United States last month vetoed a draft resolution to that effect. sense.
Full membership status is granted only if the Security Council and then two-thirds of the General Assembly approve it.
The 193 members of the UN General Assembly will vote on Friday on a draft resolution providing for giving the Palestinians additional rights and privileges from September 2024, without however obtaining the right to vote within the organ.
Diplomats said the text should win the support needed for adoption.
These new efforts come as the war in the Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas has entered its seventh month. The Jewish state also continues to expand its colonies in the occupied West Bank.
